Band or DJ?!
The choice of music at your wedding could either make or break the entire day. There are so many options for you to choose from when looking for a band or DJ for your wedding, but how do you know what will suit your taste?
There are a few things to keep in mind when starting your search and we think one of the most important things to consider is how much of your budget you would like to spend on this aspect of your day. A band tends to be more expensive vs. a DJ, however, that is not always the case. It all depends on how many people are in the band, the time of year and location.
If you aren’t sure which direction to go, let’s look at some of the pros and cons in hiring a DJ or band.
Band:
We think the main pro in having a band is that they provide live music and are sometimes a bit more interactive with the crowd. Bands do tend to be more 'showier' than a DJ because of the live performance aspect. However, some may see a downfall because there are usually some limitations with song choices. They can of course play any track requested throughout the night - it just may not be performed live. Different bands have different styles of music and it could be challenging to find one that encompasses various styles to appease you. Another item we constantly hear concerned feedback on is that bands take a break(s) after a certain amount of time. However, during that time, they can still have background music playing. If you do not hire a band that is experienced, then you could potentially have a delay or a break in the music which could further cause a rift in the liveliness of your guests or just allow them to catch a second to breathe! Our suggestion would be that if you are concerned about the amount of breaks or break time, be open, honest and communicate that to your band (or wedding planner if you have one) to ensure that everyone is on the same page in regards to their expectations to avoid any issues on the day of the wedding or event.
DJ:
One of the biggest positive items we hear regarding a DJ is that they can essentially play any song that anyone wants to hear at your wedding or event. We also find that many people would rather hear the original version of a song, rather than a band's interpretation of it. Often times we see that a band tends to be more 'personable and present,' however, a professional DJ can have an equally vibrant personality, loves interacting with guests and takes great pride in keeping everyone dancing all night long. On the other hand, a handful of DJ's may lack in a high energy vibe so our advice would be to fully interact with them before you make your decision to ensure their personality, energy and style is the best fit for you. Additionally, with a wide variety of songs available, you could run into an issue of your guests asking for songs that you don’t want played at your wedding. We advise all of our clients to be sure to communicate with the DJ or planner prior to the event date and to have a 'do not play list' in place.
With positives and negatives to each type of music, the decision is ultimately up to you. Consider the tone and vibe you want your guests to experience at your event and more importantly, what YOU will truly enjoy. At the end of the day, no matter which option you decide to go with, we suggest getting to know the professional, listen and / or go see them in a live performance to see how they interact with a crowd and what type of music they will play. All music is good music-don't stress. .the choice is yours!
